Why are coffee prices in Sydney so different by suburb?
Three factors explain the $3.20 price gap: rent (harbour and eastern suburbs are expensive per square metre), foot-traffic mix (tourist areas command premium prices) and bean sourcing (specialty roasters charge more than wholesale). Inner west suburbs combine lower rent with strong specialty culture, producing the city's best value.

How is this price data collected?
By direct phone call. An AI voice agent calls each cafe and asks one question —
"How much is a regular flat white?" — then extracts the answer from the transcript. No menu scraping, no delivery-app aggregation, no user-submitted prices. Chain cafes are excluded.

Methodology in brief
The Flat White Index is the only Sydney coffee price survey collected by direct phone contact with each cafe. Every price you see comes from a real call, recorded and transcribed. We don't aggregate menus from delivery apps, scrape websites, or accept unverified user reports.
Coverage: 23 Sydney suburbs (Phase 1), 847 independent cafes called. Chain franchises (Starbucks, Gloria Jean's, etc.) are excluded — only independent venues are surveyed.
Update cadence: Prices are recalled monthly. The dataset is licensed CC BY 4.0 and free to use with attribution.
